SUMMARY:Stitching Protest: a Lecture by Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Julia Bryan-Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Wells College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa\, America’s most prestigious honor society\, is proud to have been awarded another visiting scholar this year. Professor Julia Bryan-Wilson is coming from Columbia University to give a public lecture entitled “Stitching Protest”: \nThis talk examines how needlework textile techniques such as embroidery and quilting have been used in the last several decades as a form of protest\, both by those who consider themselves artists as well as by anonymous makers. Focusing primarily on mother-taught women of color since the 1970s\, it discusses how the stitch can be a tool for puncturing conventional narratives and for mending new art histories. \nThe PBK lectures are always fascinating events where exceptional scholars share their work. Come learn something new from the brilliant Dr. Bryan-Wilson!
