SUMMARY:Still: Jenna Rodriguez
DESCRIPTION:March 24 – April 28\, 2016\nReception with the Artist\, Thursday April 14 at 4:45pm – 6 pm\n\n\nThe exhibition Still centers around Rodriguez’s artist’s book by the same name. This hand-bound book commemorates the lives (both real and imagined) of nine of the many local animals she encountered who were killed by moving vehicles. The corresponding interdisciplinary exhibition is comprised of handmade paper\, screen prints\, embroidery\, stop-motion animation\, and installation. With wit and empathy\, Rodriguez creates larger-than-life characters inspired by each victim\, resulting in an immersive\, creative\, non-fiction narrative. \nBeginning in the summer of 2014 Rodriguez served as the Victor Hammer Fellow at Wells College\, where she taught papermaking\, printing\, and bookbinding. The Victor Hammer Fellowship was established in 1998 to bring emerging book artists to the Wells Book Arts Center for a two-year teaching and production residency.  This exhibition marks the beginning of a new commitment by the String Room Gallery to stage solo exhibitions upon the culmination of each Victor Hammer Fellow’s residency. \nJenna Rodriguez is a collector\, observer\, and artist currently based in Chicago. She recently completed a residency at Columbia College Chicago during which she completed artwork for this exhibition.  Last summer she was the recipient of The Wingate Foundation Grant\, the Edwards Foundation Grant\, and the College Book Arts Association’s Project Assistant Grant\, which allowed her to attend a papermaking course at Penland School of Craft\, build a papermaking studio for Wells College\, and continue work on Still. She graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2013 where she received a MFA in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts. During this time she had a two-year print production fellowship for Journal of Artists Books (JAB) and taught letterpress printing classes at Columbia College and Spudnik Community Print Shop. Jenna received her BFA in 2009 in printmaking and photo media with a certification to teach K-12 art from Old Dominion University in Virginia where she grew up. \nImage: 54\, Letterpress Print (still shot of animation)\, 2016

SUMMARY:Practical Work: Jillian Bruschera\, Angela Davis Fegan\, Maggie Puckett\, and Maggie Pucket + Melissa Potter (Seeds InService)
DESCRIPTION:Practical Work takes as a starting point a selection of original printed materials produced by the American and British woman suffrage movements from the early twentieth century. These posters\, banners\, cartoons\, and periodicals demonstrate the pragmatic\, strategic nature of artistic production used to support the many positions taken by various groups advocating for women’s right to vote. British organizations such as the Artists’ Suffrage League and the Suffrage Atelier formed specifically to apply members’ considerable training and skill towards the production of a persuasive visual culture that defined and promoted the cause. In the US\, individual artists worked in tandem to direct their time and creative labor towards the cause\, often sharing a common language of colors\, symbols\, and strategies to create a national and trans-atlantic conversation. \nThe community-oriented creative energy demonstrated by the suffrage artists continues today\, as demonstrated by artist Jillian Bruschera. With her Mobile Mill project she has created a transportable\, fully-mobile hand-paper making mill that “is about making things\, and it is also about making things happen.” Bruschera creates artistic communities wherever she goes\, challenging assumptions about who makes things\, where\, and why. During her residency on the Wells campus\, Bruschera will work with students to create an installation made of handmade paper and student-generated text. This project\, titled “IF/SUPPOSE\,” responds to the language and mission established by suffragist visual culture\, suggesting the idealism and cooperation needed to bring about change. \nJoining Bruschera are artists Angela Davis Fegan\, Maggie Puckett\, and Maggie Pucket + Melissa Potter (Seeds InService). Each of these artists uses printed\, hand-made paper to support images\, text\, and social interaction that advocate for feminist causes. Whether recognizing the importance of women leaders\, as in Puckett’s Revolutionary Women\, engaging in eco-feminist paper activism (“Seeds InService”)\, or using the poster form to cross between art object and active\, functional protest tool (Angela Davis Fegan and Jillian Bruschera)\, this work continues the long-standing alliance between printed matter and collective political engagement. \n“Practical Work” is the result of invaluable assistance from The Howland Stone Store Museum and Wells College Archives at Louis Jefferson Long Library. Jillian Bruschera’s residency with the Wells College Book Arts Center is supported by the College’s Scholar In-Residence program.
