SUMMARY:Primer For Well Water: Justin Randolph Thompson & Bradly Dever Treadaway
DESCRIPTION:October 23 – December 3\, 2014 \nJustin Randolph Thompson and Bradly Dever Treadaway have collaborated over the past 15 years through the mediums of photography\, installation\, video and performance. Their collaboration revolves around ideas of cultural clash\, generational divide\, social hierarchies\, the resonance of collective and personal identity and a legacy of spiritual ascension. Their upcoming String Room Gallery exhibition\, “Primer for Well Water\,” is an installation and performance that examines the social cleansing and eroding powers of water. Drawing its title from allusions to Robert P. T. Coffin’s celebration of American Culture in his “Primer for America” and from Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem “Primer for Blacks\,” the piece takes an interdisciplinary approach to collective and specifically documented identities from Afro American and Euro American inheritance. This exhibition will feature work from throughout their careers\, and will include works completed on site in collaboration with Wells College students. \nJustin Randolph Thompson is a sculptor and new media artist born in Peekskill\, NY. Living between Italy and the US since 2001\, he has exhibited internationally and participated in numerous residencies in the US and in Europe. His work explores the historic implications of triumph\, victory and ascension by re-contextualizing references from Roman antiquity and mending these with aspects of African-American culture both past and present. \nBradly Dever Treadaway is a Brooklyn based artist and teacher utilizing photography\, video\, film and installation to emphasize socially conscious themes and self-awareness. He works as both a Faculty member and the Digital Media Coordinator at the International Center of Photography in New York City. His work revolves around fleeting family histories visualized through domestic rituals and the loss of cultural tradition\, aspiring to reunite present and past through visual metaphor. \nThompson and Treadaway’s shared accolades include a Fulbright Fellowship and a Jerome Fellowship to Franconia Sculpture Park. The artists’ work can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Public Library\, the Mobile Museum of Art and the Center for Photography at Woodstock.

SUMMARY:Illusions: Julia Forrest
DESCRIPTION:September 11 – October 8\, 2014 \nForrest’s photography is rooted in traditional Black and White darkroom processes\, exploring the unique visual and spatial possibilities of images created solely in the lens. Describing her process as “[challenging] the notion of the landscape by referencing what makes a photograph\,” Forrest depicts her female subjects enacting interventions on the pictorial logic of the photograph itself. She draws inspiration from Greek mythology and Pictorialist photographic tradition\, creating work with a distinctively allegorical\, surreal quality. Illusion will consist of selections from three bodies of work\, each of which demonstrates unique strategies for her ultimate project. \nForrest teaches photography at the Brooklyn Museum\, Medgar Evers College\, the Newark Museum\, and Lehigh University\, and in recent years has worked as an assistant to photographer and video artist William Wegman. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in numerous venues in and around New York City and New England. Forrest earned a BFA in Photography from the University of Hartford\, Hartford Art School.

SUMMARY:Henry Wesselwoman: Alli Miller + Trey Burns
DESCRIPTION:March 19 – April 24\, 2014 \nAlli Miller + Trey Burns have an ongoing collaborative practice through which they explore liminal\, hyperbolic\, and humorous visions of the American commercial landscape. This latest effort features work stemming from a character they’ve designed named “Henry Wesselwoman\,” a direct revisionist reference to the New Topographics generation of landscape photography. They will employ photography and installation to engage with and reconsider this history. \nMiller + Burns’ past exhibitions featured a collaborative archive entitled “Wessel Castle\,” derived from their travels through the American landscape. Miller is an artist and designer working in Los Angeles\, whose work is premised on the investigation of liminal moments to underscore the psychosexual\, relational\, and linguistic trends of display and consumerism. She received a BFA from Cooper Union and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Southern California. Burns holds an MFA in Painting & New Media from the Savannah College of Art & Design. His practice examines the humors and banalities of monoculture\, documenting the peripheries of the post-industrial United States. \nMiller + Burns’ collaborative work has been featured in recent exhibitions including at et al Projects\, Brooklyn (2013); Fountain Art Fair\, New York (2013); May Gallery\, New Orleans (2013); and BRUCENNIAL\, New York (2012). SUMMARY:Throughline: Sayward Schoonmaker
DESCRIPTION:October 24 – December 6\, 2013 \nSayward Schoonmaker‘s work centers around the use of clichéd and intimate language\, often taking form as poetry installed on walls\, spoken in recordings\, or in collaboration with moving images. Whether spoken or printed\, her texts benefit from her careful attention to the shape\, sound\, and space between words\, resulting in emotionally potent\, delicately crafted work. She describes her work as beginning with “a witness to intimacy\,” leading to artwork that explores the “sincere gravity and exaggerated sentimentality of emotional transition.” The exhibition “Through Line” is comprised of video\, sound\, installation\, and poetry\, and will be augmented by a performative artist talk prior to the opening reception. \nSchoonmaker’s work has been featured in galleries\, journals\, and performance venues. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois Chicago. Originally from Plainfield\, NY\, Sayward Schoonmaker completed her BFA (2007) at Skidmore College and MFA (2010) degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently lives in Johnson\, Vermont and is an instructor in the Department of English at Johnson State College.
