The String Room Gallery at Wells College recognizes our responsibility to acknowledge our colonial history. The Gallery resides on the site of Chonodote, a village on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫɁ (Cayuga) Nation, a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, who have cared for this land since time immemorial and whose relationships to this place endure.  As a cultural institution situated within a college, we commit to learning, listening, unlearning, acting and being in relationship to Indigenous communities and cultural life.

The 1,600 square foot gallery hosts five exhibitions each year featuring a range of regional and national contemporary artists. Twice a year, student artwork is exhibited: the Annual Student Exhibition features work by campus artists, and the Senior Thesis Exhibition is organized, installed, and presented each May by graduating visual art majors. Receptions are held to celebrate each exhibition and attendees have an opportunity to meet and interact with the artists. Please see the Exhibitions pages for dates and details.

A serene, sunlit space located on the first floor of the College's Main Building, the room is complemented by a beautiful wood parquet floor, subtle track and natural lighting, and a large Arts-and-Crafts hearth with an ornate wood-and-ceramic mantle. The gallery provides space for intimate receptions and gatherings, and is an important pedagogical space for the Visual Arts Department and Book Arts Center.
